Pathanamthitta: It has been reported that food items provided to Sabarimala pilgrims were prepared using water from a toilet tap at a shop in Pathanamthitta. The establishment operated by Abdul Shemeem, the Erumeli Regional Secretary of DYFI, faced consequences for this unsanitary act.
Abdul Shemeem, who holds the licence for the shop, received a fine of Rs 25,000 from the health department in response to the incident. Mariamma Sunny, the Panchayat president, revealed that Shemeem paid Rs 15,000 the previous day, with the remaining amount promised to be settled later.
DYFI leader Shemeem initially operated a shop selling stationery and sindoor under contract. However, an unauthorized tea shop was subsequently established, with this discovery emerging during inspections conducted by vigilance and health workers. The irregularities extended to the use of tap water from an adjacent unhygienic toilet for making tea, coffee, and lemon water.
