Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has appointed Professor Bijoy Nandan as the Vice Chancellor of Kannur University, according to an official statement from the Raj Bhavan on Friday.
Professor Bijoy Nandan, currently serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Sciences at Cochin University of Science and Technology, assumes the VC role at Kannur University.
This comes a day after the Supreme Court quashed a notification relating to the reappointment of Kannur University Vice-Chancellor and found that the appointment was an unwarranted intervention of the state government.
Expressing dissatisfaction, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan criticized Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan after the court’s ruling, asserting that the interference from the state government was evident. The Governor alleged that the pressure for the reappointment came from the Chief Minister’s office, with the Higher Education Minister acting as a tool for the government.
On Thursday, a bench comprising Chief Justice Bharat DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, overturned the Kerala High Court order and quashed the notification for the reappointment of the VC at Kannur University.
