Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned economist Dr. M. Kunhaman has passed away. The 74-year-old was discovered deceased at his residence in Sreekaryam, Thiruvananthapuram. Dr. Kunhaman served as an economics professor at Kerala University for 27 years.
His autobiography, ‘Ethiru’ (Against), earned him the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Best Autobiography. However, he declined the award, expressing his disinterest in such honors within his academic and intellectual pursuits. He researched and wrote about Dalit oppression in the state.
Born in Palakkad to Cheron and Ayyappan, Dr. Kunhaman’s early life was marked by poverty and caste persecution. In 1974 he secured the first rank in MA Economics from Calicut University. Former President of India, K R Narayanan, was the only other Dalit student to be a rank-holder from the University before Kunhaman.
