Thiruvananthapuram: In a recent Cabinet meeting, approval was granted to introduce an ordinance to amend the State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) Act. The goal is to make the GST rules clearer for gambling activities.
Following the 50th GST Council meeting, it was decided that a 28 percent GST rate would be applied to casino operations, horse racing, and online games. Additionally, the tax would be levied based on the face value of the bet.
Subsequently, the central government issued a notification amending the GST Act, and in line with this, provisions are in the State GST Act. This move aligns with similar amendments being made by other states.
The ordinance aims to make the rules for taxing gambling activities clearer and remove uncertainties in the current GST law related to betting for money, like online gaming, casinos, and horse racing. These changes will be in effect on October 1, creating a more straightforward system for taxing these activities.
