Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has affirmed its commitment to awarding the promised rewards to the medal-winning athletes from the Hangzhou Asian Games. The announcement of the prize money was made during a cabinet meeting held on October 10, responding to concerns raised by athletes threatening to leave the state due to alleged neglect.
The government specified a reward structure, with gold medal winners slated to receive Rs 25 lakh, silver medal recipients to be awarded Rs 19 lakh, and bronze medal achievers to get Rs 12.5 lakh.
Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman assured that the allocated sums would be deposited into the athletes’ accounts within a week, but the promised financial incentives have yet to reach the deserving athletes even after one month of declaration.
The Asian Games saw Kerala’s largest-ever contingent, with 45 athletes representing the state across 13 events. The athletes returned home with an impressive tally of 11 medals.
Players winning medals include PR Sreejesh securing a medal with a historic victory in hockey, while badminton player HS Pranooy clinched two medals. Other notable achievements came from Dipika Pallikal Karthik, hailing from Kottayam, in squash .
