Thiruvananthapuram: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is set to summon CPI (M) Thrissur secretary MM Varghese once again in connection with the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank scam. Varghese has been requested to appear before the ED on the 19th of this month. This will mark the third round of questioning for Varghese pertaining to the Karuvannur Bank case. He was previously summoned but did not attend the session last Tuesday.
The focus of the ED’s inquiry revolves around the CPI (M) accounts linked to the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank. Their investigation aims to reveal the possibility of significant funds being received by the party through illegal loans. According to ED officials, the CPI (M) maintains five accounts at the Karuvannur Bank, where transactions totaling no less than Rs 50 lakh have been traced. Notably, these accounts were managed by M P Raju and Aravindakshan P R.
Earlier inquiries by the ED provided information concerning two CPI (M) accounts. It was disclosed that funds from these accounts were used following the exposure of fraudulent transactions linked to Benami loans. However, the CPI (M) was not ready to hand over the account details. Varghese has been reluctant to disclose the account’s financial details, suggesting that inquiries about the accounts should be made to the state secretary.
