Thiruvananthapuram: Counseling classes is set to be introduced to address the rising mental health concerns among police officers, following directives from the Director General of Police (DGP). This initiative comes as a response to the growing trend of officers taking extended leaves and seeking alternative employment without proper authorization.
In the DGP’s directive, it says that police will be granted leave on occasions such as wedding anniversaries and children’s birthdays. Additionally, efforts will be made to maximize weekly offs and sanctioned holidays. The directive also encourages the incorporation of yoga class into the officers’ routine.
One of particular concern is the alarming increase in suicides among police officers, with 69 suicides recorded in the past four years. Statistics indicate that a significant number of these cases are linked to depression. To address these concerns, the DGP proposes counselling for individuals exhibiting suicidal tendencies and those grappling with mental stress.
