THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A new variant of Corona has been reported in Kerala. Kerala Health Minister Veena George stated that the Covid-19 sub-variant JN. 1, detected in the state, is not a cause for concern. She mentioned that the government identified the sub-variant through genomic sequencing, emphasizing the state’s robust health system. However, the Minister urged people, especially those with symptoms, to stay alert.

It is reported that the highly mutated Corona variant BA.2.86, also known as the JN-1 co-variant of Pirola, has been reported in different parts of Kerala.

The India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has confirmed the presence of the new Corona variant in Kerala.

INSACOG is a consortium of laboratories under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare established by the Government of India on December 30, 2020. Its purpose is to study and monitor genome sequencing and virus variations of circulating strains of COVID-19 in India.

INSACOG mentioned that this is a rapidly spreading virus, and the situation is under close monitoring.

Meanwhile, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) officials from reported that the Union Health Ministry is conducting mock drills throughout the country to assess their public-health and hospital-preparedness measures
