New Delhi: As the COVID cases are increasing in the country, 602 individuals were tested positive for the JN. 1 variant in the last 24 hours. Five deaths were reported, including two in Kerala and one each in Karnataka, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu.
As of now, the total confirmed infections stand at 4,440, with Karnataka topping the list with 199 cases reported in the last 24 hours. Following closely, Kerala recorded 148 new cases. Other states affected include Goa (47 cases), Gujarat (36 cases), Maharashtra (32 cases), Tamil Nadu (26 cases), Delhi (15 cases), Rajasthan (four cases), and two cases in Telangana. Additionally, one case each was reported in Odisha and Rajasthan.
The JN.1 sub-variant, derived from the novel lineage BA.2.86 of the Omicron variant, was first identified in India last August. Despite its emergence, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has yet to confirm its potential as a significant threat. Beyond the usual COVID symptoms, individuals with the JN.1 variant may experience additional indicators such as runny noses, fatigue, sore throats, hoarseness, and diarrhoea.
