Thrissur: Devotees will gather at Guruvayur Temple today to celebrate Kuchela Dinam. Thousands of devotees will come to see Lord Krishna with offerings of aval (beaten rice).
As part of the day’s rituals, the Devaswom is preparing an aval nivedyam (offering) valued at Rs. 3.5 lakh. This dish comprises beaten rice mixed with grated coconut, jaggery, ghee, dried ginger, and cumin. The nivedyam will be presented to Sree Guruvayoorappan during the Pantheeradi Pooja and Athazha Pooja. The preparation of this offering is conducted by the Nambudiris from 13 Keezhsanthi families. As part of the day’s festivities, film star Divya Unni’s dance performance at 6.30 pm and Dr. Sabhapati’s Kuchelavritham Kathakali rendition are scheduled.
Kuchela Dinam is observed on the first Wednesday (Muppett Wednesday) of the month of Dhanu (December–January) in the Malayalam calendar. The celebration originates from the Bhagavata Purana, which narrates the tale of Kuchela presenting a package of aval to his childhood friend Krishna. Lord Krishna, pleased by Kuchela’s love and devotion, blessed him with eternal happiness and prosperity. So, this day is celebrated as Kuchela Dinam, symbolising friendship, devotion, and divine blessings.
