Ernakulam: Following the Supreme Court’s verdict leading to the removal of Prof. Gopinath Ravindran from the position of Vice Chancellor at Kannur University, details have emerged regarding his salary and the university’s expenses related to the legal case. Gopinath Raveendran received Rs. 60 lakh as salary during his two-year tenure, encompassing the period from his reappointment until the Supreme Court’s dismissal. Notably, Rs. 33 lakh was spent by the university to support Gopinath Raveendran in legal proceedings challenging his reappointment, both in the High Court and the Supreme Court.

The controversy surrounding the reappointment of Professor Gopinath Raveendran as Vice Chancellor on November 24, 2021, reached its climax when the Supreme Court dismissed him from the post on October 31, 2023, citing procedural lapses. During his 23 months of service, excluding the last month’s salary, Gopinath Raveendran received Rs. 59.7 lakh as salary. These details were disclosed in response to an inquiry filed by Proper Channel president MK Haridas in Kochi under the Right to Information Act. The Supreme Court has clarified that the salary received during the reappointment period should not be subject to recovery.
