Thiruvananthapuram: Responding to complaints of inflated Maximum Retail Prices (MRP) on cigarette packets sold throughout the state, authorities have intensified inspections. The Legal Metrology Department is actively conducting inspections in various business establishments across the state.
Under the Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities Rule, altering the printed price and selling products at a different rate is deemed illegal. However, violations have been identified in the sale of Wills and Navy Cut cigarette packets, which are being sold with altered MRPs. In a comprehensive statewide inspection, the Legal Metrology Department has imposed fines totaling Rs 1,67,000.
On January 9, the department inspected 257 institutions across the state. It was discovered that cigarette packets labeled with an MRP of Rs 49 were being sold at Rs 80 in 51 reported cases.
