Thiruvananthapuram: The Regulatory Commission has granted approval for KSEB to procure electricity from external sources at an increased cost, a move aimed at addressing the rising summer electricity demand. KSEB has confirmed that consumers will experience a surcharge in the upcoming months due to this decision. Despite the restoration of a canceled contract for 465 MW, power companies were hesitant to supply electricity, and KSEB’s reluctance to pursue legal action has sparked public discontent.
According to the data released yesterday, the state’s electricity consumption surpassed 86 million units. To address potential shortages during the impending summer season, KSEB has opted to acquire an additional 250 MW of electricity between April and May. Contracts have been finalized with Adani Enterprises, PTC India, and Tata Powers at a rate of Rs 8.69 per unit. KSEB asserts that, despite the restoration of the 465 MW contracts at Rs 4.29 per unit, the contracted companies are failing to fulfill their power supply commitments.
