Kannur: The court has sentenced the first accused, identified as a CPI(M) activist, to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh in connection with a bombing incident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals. This verdict comes 21 years after the tragic incident occurred.
The incident occurred when CPI(M) workers targeted individuals returning from the funeral of slain BJP worker Uthaman, hurling bombs at their jeep. Both the jeep driver, Shihab, and passenger, Ammuvamma, lost their lives in the attack.
In 2002, the court had sentenced 24 out of the 25 accused involved in the incident to life imprisonment and imposed fines. However, the first accused, Arshad, remained in hiding following the incident. Upon his appearance in court, Arshad was found guilty, leading to the court’s decision to sentence him to life imprisonment and levy the specified fine.
