Kannur: CPM workers who were accused of a murder case assumed alcohol while they were being taken to Centrail jail from the court, with favour of the police. The jail authorities demanded a medical examination to be undertaken as they were found drunk and sent them back. The convicts were sentenced for a lifetime imprisonment for the murder of a BJP worker K.V.Surendran in Thalassery. The police arranged the liquor party to the five convicted in the hotel.

The five convicted were sent to the Thalassery General Hospital for medical examination. The inspection did not record that the convicted were drunk. They left Thalassery at 4.45 pm and was taken to the Kannur Central Jail, which is only 22 kms away, at around 6.45 pm.

They were accompanied by a policeman from Thalassery station. According to police, they went to a Thalassery hotel to buy food for the culprits. Prior to entering the Central jail, the authorities found that the five convicted were all drunk.

After that the jail superintendent demanded for a medical examination to be undertaken and sent them back to the hospital. The convicted were admitted to jail only after the medical examination.

Earlier, prominent CPM leaders from Thalassery, including AN Shamseer MLA, had come to hear the verdict.
