Kozhikode: Patients are facing difficulties due to the financial crisis of the Kerala government. It has been 8 days since the supply of medicines stopped at Kozhikode Medical College. The Medical College Pharmacy is currently not operational due to being out of stock.
The medical suppliers have informed that the Kerala government needs to pay around Rs 75 crore. In this situation, the suppliers can only resume medicine supply after receiving the amount owed by the Kerala government. Due to this, there is a situation where surgeries and other major treatments in the hospital have been halted. Dialysis and cancer patients are suffering the most.
The drug distributors informed that they are also facing issues due to nonpayment from the Kerala government for the last 8 months. Medical suppliers have stated that they will resume the supply of medicine to the hospital as soon as the pending amount is received. This move by the drug suppliers comes after they sent multiple letters to the Kerala State Health Department and the Finance Department, requesting settlement of the arrears, which proved unsuccessful.
The drug suppliers have also informed that if the dues are not settled by March 31, the companies supplying surgical devices, including stents, will also stop the supply of medical devices.
