West Texas: An unidentified man fired from his vehicle, killing five people was shot and killed by police in a gun battle in a movie theatre parking lot, authorities said on Saturday.
At least 21 people were injured said Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke at a news conference. Gerke said the incident began at 3:17 p.m. CT (4:17 p.m. ET) when a Department of Public Safety officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a gold Honda. When the vehicle came to a stop, the driver shot the officer, he said.
He then moved on to the west in Odessa and shot down another person and then continued through the city where “there were multiple victims,” the chief said.
The shooter then abandoned his vehicle at one point, hijacked a mail truck and continued firing at more people, Gerke said.
The shooter then drove toward the Cinergy movie theatre, where he and police officers exchanged gunfire in the parking lot and the man was killed, the chief said.
