San Francisco: A large number of Twitter accounts were closed down for “spreading geopolitical narratives favourable” to the Chinese government.
About 1,70,000 accounts were shut down for pushing deceptive narratives around the Hong Kong protests, COVID-19 and other subjects.
Twitter is officially blocked in China, however people can access it using a VPN.
Twitter informed that it had identified 23,750 accounts as a “highly engaged core network” that were used to tweet content favourable to China and a further 150,000 accounts that were used to amplify the content, like retweeting content posted by core accounts.
The company also blocked accounts that had connection to Russia and Turkey.
