UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak considering a global AI watchdog

London: According to media reports, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is contemplating the establishment of a global artificial intelligence (AI) watchdog based in London. The proposed watchdog’s primary objective would be to monitor and address potential threats posed by AI technology. Prime Minister Sunak is expected to discuss collaboration on AI monitoring during his upcoming meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House next week.

One of the ideas being considered by Downing Street is the creation of a global AI authority in London, taking inspiration from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) based in Vienna.

This potential regulatory initiative comes at a time when the European Union (EU) is finalising its Artificial Intelligence Act, which is expected to adopt a stringent stance on overseeing the AI sector. Meanwhile, the United States is also considering regulatory measures, but it is anticipated that their approach will be comparatively less severe. These efforts reflect the growing global concerns surrounding the safety and ethical implications of AI technology.

The establishment of a London-based global AI watchdog would reinforce the UK’s commitment to promoting responsible and accountable AI practises. By monitoring and addressing potential risks associated with AI, the authority would strive to ensure the technology’s safe and ethical implementation across various industries.
