London: Shaktikanta Das, the esteemed chief of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been bestowed with the prestigious ‘Governor of the Year’ award at the Central Banking Awards 2023 held in London. The winners of these awards were announced in late March of this year, with the National Bank of Ukraine receiving the esteemed title of 2023 Central Bank of the Year.

The event organisers lauded Shaktikanta Das for his exemplary leadership, recognising his instrumental role in implementing critical reforms, pioneering groundbreaking advancements in payment systems, and effectively guiding India through challenging times with unwavering resolve and articulate communication. They also praised Das for his capable management during his tenure, which began in 2018 and was marked by significant challenges such as the collapse of a major non-bank firm, navigating the waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, and dealing with the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which had inflationary ramifications.

Shaktikanta Das, a retired IAS officer who previously served as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue and the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance, assumed the role of the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on December 12, 2018. Prior to his appointment as RBI Governor, Das held prominent positions such as Member of the 15th Finance Commission and G20 Sherpa of India. With over 40 years of extensive experience in various facets of governance, he has made significant contributions in the domains of finance, taxation, industries, and infrastructure while serving in key positions in both the central and state governments.

The recognition of Shaktikanta Das as the ‘Governor of the Year’ at the Central Banking Awards 2023 not only acknowledges his outstanding achievements but also underscores his pivotal role in shaping India’s financial landscape and safeguarding its economic stability.
