Moscow: President Vladimir Putin expressed his appreciation for the robust ties between Russia and the United Arab Emirates during a meeting with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the leader of the oil-rich nation. The meeting took place in Saint Petersburg on the sidelines of an economic summit, where both leaders discussed their countries’ strategic partnership.
“The Emirates are a very good partner,” President Putin said in televised comments at the start of the meeting. He extended his gratitude to President Al-Nahyan for the UAE’s involvement in facilitating prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine, as well as Russia and the United States.
According to the UAE’s official news agency, WAM, President Al-Nahyan expressed his support for de-escalation and a political resolution to the Ukraine conflict during the discussions. The UAE and Russia have maintained close cooperation as members of the OPEC+ oil alliance. Notably, Dubai has remained one of the few global capitals to sustain direct flights to Moscow since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.
