Paris: An explosion shook a street near Paris’ historic Latin Quarter on Wednesday, leading to a search for two missing individuals and leaving four others in critical condition. The powerful blast originated from a building in central Paris, causing extensive injuries to at least 37 people.
The incident occurred on Rue Saint-Jacques, a prominent thoroughfare stretching from the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral to the Sorbonne University, in the late afternoon. The explosion triggered a fire, which sent smoke billowing over the iconic landmarks of the French capital. Consequently, authorities evacuated nearby properties as a precautionary measure. While the possibility of a gas leak as the cause of the explosion is being considered, Paris police spokesperson Loubna Atta emphasised that it is still too early to definitively determine the source of the fire. Reports attributing the blast to a gas explosion remain unconfirmed. Swift action from emergency responders brought the fire under control, despite the initial large plumes of black smoke that engulfed the surrounding neighbourhood.
Upon arrival at the scene, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau indicated that preliminary analysis of camera footage suggested that the explosion originated within the building, situated adjacent to the Val de Grâce church. According to Paris police Chief Laurent Nunez, the structure was immediately enveloped in flames but was eventually brought under control. The area has been roped off as a precaution, and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has visited the scene to investigate the situation.
To deal with the fallout from the explosion, Paris officials formed an emergency response team to coordinate the required activities and aid individuals affected by the tragedy.
