Cairo: During his state visit to Egypt on June 24–25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to the renowned Al-Hakim Mosque in Cairo. Dating back to the 11th century, the mosque holds great historical and cultural significance for Egypt.

The Al-Hakim Mosque, with its centuries-old legacy, serves as a beacon of religious and historical importance, showcasing the remarkable fusion of Indian and Egyptian cultures. Prime Minister Modi’s visit further underscores the shared heritage and mutual respect between the two countries.

In addition to his visit to the mosque, Prime Minister Modi also paid tribute to Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the First World War at the Heliopolis War Grave Cemetery. This gesture solidifies the historical bond between India and Egypt, honouring the bravery and sacrifices made by Indian soldiers.

The Prime Minister also engaged with the Indian Diaspora residing in Egypt, fostering people-to-people ties and providing a platform for cultural exchange and economic growth. The Indian Diaspora’s presence and participation in welcoming PM Modi not only showcased their enthusiasm but also highlighted their role in contributing to the bilateral relationship between India and Egypt.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi engaged with the Bohra community, who played a significant role in the restoration of the Al-Hakim Mosque. Originating from the Fatima dynasty, the Bohra community in India has been involved in the mosque’s renovation since the 1970s. Additionally, the Prime Minister had a meeting with Dr Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam, the Grand Mufti of Egypt.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Egypt is a reciprocal gesture following President El-Sisi’s participation as the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations earlier this year. The President’s visit marked a significant milestone, leading to the elevation of the bilateral relationship between the two nations to a strategic partnership.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi held a productive roundtable meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Mostafa Madbouly. The warm welcome extended to PM Modi by the Indian community in Egypt, with chants of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Modi Modi’ at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, further exemplified the strong bond shared between India and Egypt. The Indian Diaspora’s vibrant display of patriotism, including singing Indian songs and presenting cultural programs, added to the celebratory atmosphere.
