New York: India has expressed disappointment over the UN General Assembly’s decision to postpone the inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform to its next session, calling it “yet another wasted opportunity.” Indian representative Ruchira Kamboj stated that this ongoing delay benefits those who desire to maintain the status quo and perpetuate a stagnant process.
During the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Kamboj emphasized that the rollover decision on intergovernmental negotiations should not be regarded as a mere technical procedure but rather as a significant matter. She underscored that this decision, which concludes the IGN for the current session, must reflect the progress made through year-long deliberations among member states.
The UN General Assembly adopted a draft oral decision to continue the intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform during the upcoming 78th session, scheduled to commence in September. Kamboj emphasized that this decision should go beyond repetitive speeches and focus on text-based negotiations, as it is the primary outcome that emerges from this process each year.
India, as a responsible and constructive member of the United Nations, pledged to remain engaged in the reform process alongside like-minded partners. The country expressed its commitment to pushing for substantive progress and advocating for meaningful changes in Security Council reforms.
