Moscow: In a recent telephone conversation, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the ongoing situation in Ukraine and Russia’s successful handling of an armed mutiny, as confirmed by the Kremlin and New Delhi.
According to Moscow, Modi expressed support for the decisive actions taken by the Russian leadership in resolving the mutiny involving the Wagner mercenary group, which occurred last Saturday.
The Indian government stated that during the call, Putin briefed Modi on the recent developments in Russia. The two leaders are also scheduled to participate in a virtual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation on Tuesday.
This conversation follows the recent declaration by the United States and India, during Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to Washington, that they are “among the closest partners in the world.”
India, while maintaining its alliance with Russia, has refrained from condemning the invasion of Ukraine and has consistently called for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. In a statement, New Delhi reiterated Modi’s stance on promoting dialogue and diplomacy while discussing the situation in Ukraine.
The leader of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, shocked the world when he led an armed revolt, only to abruptly call it off as his fighters approached Moscow. In addition, Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held a conversation with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev on Wednesday to discuss the failed mutiny, according to a source in the Indian security establishment.
