Kabul: In the midst of Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, India has stepped forward to provide much-needed assistance by donating 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the landlocked nation.
On Tuesday, the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) confirmed the arrival of 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat in the city of Heart, Afghanistan, as conveyed through a tweet.
This recent contribution follows India’s earlier support of 20,000 metric tonnes of wheat sent to Afghanistan last month, utilising Iran’s Chabahar port, as reported by Afghanistan-based Khaama Press. Additionally, a previous wheat aid delivery of 40,000 metric tonnes was facilitated through Pakistan’s land border.
By expanding the avenues for aid distribution, India underscores its commitment to promoting stability and prosperity in Afghanistan, as per Khaama Press.
Afghanistan, currently under Taliban rule, is confronted with an unprecedented humanitarian crisis wherein the fundamental rights of its citizens, particularly women, are being denied. According to an assessment by the World Food Programme, Afghanistan is among the nations experiencing extreme food insecurity, with nine million people grappling with severe economic difficulties and hunger. Since the Taliban assumed control in August 2021, the country’s law and order situation has deteriorated, leading to a surge in terrorism and explosive incidents.
