London: James Cleverly, the UK Foreign Secretary, strongly condemned any direct attacks on the Indian High Commission in London, describing such actions as “completely unacceptable.” Cleverly took to Twitter to express the UK’s stance on the matter, emphasising that the safety of the High Commission’s staff is of utmost importance. His statement was prompted by the emergence of posters advertising a pro-Khalistan rally in London on July 8.
Alex Ellis, the British High Commissioner to India, also responded to Cleverly’s tweet, affirming that the UK government prioritizes the safety of its friends and colleagues.
In addition to London, similar threats against Indian diplomats have surfaced in Canada. Posters allegedly circulated by Sikh extremists have specifically named the Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, and the Consulate General of India in Toronto, Apoorva Srivastava.
Addressing the issue, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, urged partner countries such as Canada, the UK, and Australia to refrain from providing platforms to Khalistani groups. He emphasised that these radical extremist ideologies are detrimental to bilateral relationships between nations.
