Ottawa: In an unexpected announcement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie revealed on Wednesday that they are parting ways, marking what seems to be the conclusion of their prominent 18-year marriage. Throughout the years, the couple openly discussed the challenges in their relationship, and more recently, they were seen less frequently together in public—an observation contrary to their earlier years, during which Sophie played a significant role in the electoral campaign of the interim PM.
Justin Trudeau (51) and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau (48), exchanged vows in May 2005 and are parents to three children, aged 15, 14, and nine. On their 2020 anniversary, Trudeau affectionately referred to Sophie as “my rock, my partner, and my best friend.”
For Trudeau, this situation also evokes poignant historical parallels. His father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, experienced a separation from his wife, Margaret, in 1977, during his time in office. This development stands as one of the most significant personal challenges Trudeau has faced since assuming the role of prime minister in 2015, particularly given his consistent emphasis on the value of family life.
The couple’s announcement came a week after Trudeau initiated an extensive cabinet reshuffle aimed at bolstering the standing of his Liberal Party, which is currently lagging in the polls. Despite the circumstances, Trudeau’s determination to lead the Liberals into the next election, slated for no later than October 2025, remains steadfast.
Trudeau conveyed the news through an Instagram post, stating, “Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.” An almost identical message was shared by Sophie Gregoire on her own Instagram account.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, a close confidant of Trudeau, is scheduled to brief cabinet members later on Wednesday. It is also anticipated that Trudeau will address the separation publicly sometime this week. Trudeau’s office emphasised that the two have formalised their separation through a legal agreement, underscoring their mutual commitment to raising their children. The family is planning to spend a vacation together next week.
Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, known for her advocacy for gender equality and her academic background in commerce, was working as a reporter when she crossed paths with Trudeau in 2003. Their union unfolded two years later. Trudeau was a mere 43 year old when he assumed office as prime minister in late 2015 and the couple swiftly captured the global media’s attention.
