Brasilia: A team of scientists in Brazil, the world’s second-largest consumer of cocaine, has unveiled a cutting-edge treatment for addiction to the drug and its potent derivative, crack: a vaccine.
This experimental vaccine known as ‘Calixcoca’, which has displayed promising outcomes in animal trials, stimulates an immune response that obstructs the passage of cocaine and cracks the brain. The researchers are hopeful that this approach can assist individuals in breaking free from the grip of addiction, as it would render addicts incapable of experiencing the euphoria associated with the drugs.
Dr. Frederico Garcia, a psychiatrist who heads the team responsible for this breakthrough at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, remarked that if the treatment receives regulatory approval, it would mark a historic milestone as the first instance of a vaccine being employed in the treatment of cocaine addiction.
