Washington: Five members of the United States military lost their lives in a helicopter crash during a routine training exercise in the Mediterranean, as reported by US officials on Sunday.
While the officials did not disclose the helicopter’s departure point, it is noteworthy that the United States had deployed a carrier strike group to the Mediterranean. This deployment is part of the broader efforts to prevent the Israel-Hamas conflict from escalating into a regional crisis.
The incident occurred during a standard air-refuelling mission as part of military training. The US European Command (EUCOM) released a statement on November 10, revealing that a US military aircraft carrying five service members encountered a mishap and subsequently crashed into the Mediterranean Sea. Unfortunately, all five service members on board the aircraft lost their lives.
President Joe Biden expressed his condolences to the victims in a statement from the White House. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin also offered his sympathies, confirming that the crashed aircraft was a helicopter.
