Beijing: An earthquake has struck Gansu Province in China, claiming the lives of 111 individuals and leaving over 400 people injured. The calamity caused extensive damage to numerous buildings. Rescue operations are progressing rapidly in the area.
The earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale, struck the Gansu-Qinghai border area. Its epicentre is located 100 kilometres southwest of Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province. The seismic activity was followed by several minor aftershocks.
Reports from the Chinese news agency indicate disruptions to electricity and water supplies in the affected area. Heavy snowfall in the area has added complexity to the ongoing relief efforts.
