Kozhikode: Kozhikode has once again been acknowledged by UNESCO. The Kunnamangalam Bhagawati Temple’s semi-open hall, known as Karnikara Mandapam, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This marks the third temple in Kerala to receive this recognition.
Constructed 400 years ago, Karnikara Mandapam is characterised by its 16 pillars, in accordance with the principles of Tatvashastra. It took two and a half months to reconstruct the mandapam. The Archival and Research Project (ARPO) coordinated the activities at the Kunnamangalam Bhagawati Temple.
Just days prior to this, the Karnikara Mandapam was honoured with the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for cultural heritage conservation. UNESCO evaluated 12 notable sites in the Asia-Pacific region for this award. UNESCO had also honoured the Koothambalam at Guruvayur Temple and the activities of Vadakkumnathan Temple at Thrissur.
