Seoul: Lee Sun-kyun, the lead actor of the Oscar-winning film ‘Parasite’, has been found dead at the age of 48. His body was found inside a car at a park in central Seoul, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The actor had recently faced an investigation by the police for suspected illegal drug use. Lee was summoned three times for allegedly consuming cannabis and drugs from the house of a bar hostess. He informed the police that he had been cheated and was unaware of the substances he had consumed. Lee further claimed to be a victim of blackmail and to have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Lee lived alone, leaving behind his wife and two children.
‘Parasite’, the Oscar-winning film in 2020, brought international acclaim to Lee Sun-kyun. The movie secured four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and also received the Palme d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival, making it the first South Korean film to achieve this honour.
Following the success of Parasite, Lee Sun-kyun starred in Apple TV+’s inaugural South Korean series, ‘Dr Brain’, and received a nomination for Best Actor at the 2022 International Emmy Awards. His contribution to Korean cinema established him as a well-known and respected figure.
