Ottawa: In the ongoing diplomatic tension between Bharat and Canada surrounding the murder of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar earlier this year, reports suggest that police authorities in Canada are poised to make arrests in the coming weeks. According to sources cited by The Globe and Mail ( a prominent Canadian newspaper), the two men suspected of fatally shooting Nijjar in British Columbia have been under police surveillance and are expected to be apprehended soon.
The Canadian media report indicates that, contrary to speculation, the alleged killers did not leave Canada following Nijjar’s death in Surrey. Instead, they have reportedly been monitored by law enforcement for several months. Furthermore, two sources mentioned in the report suggest that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are gearing up to make arrests and lay charges in the coming weeks.
The strained relations between Bharat and Canada escalated when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Bharat of involvement in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil earlier this year. Bharat dismissed the allegations as “absurd and motivated” and, in response to Ottawa’s expulsion of a senior Indian diplomat, expelled a Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move. Nijjar was fatally shot outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, Canada, on June 18.
