Jeddah: According to a media report, two individuals, including a gunman, were killed during an attack on the US Consulate in Jeddah. The incident occurred when a person in a car stopped near the American Consulate building on Wednesday evening and exited the vehicle with a firearm in hand. Security authorities swiftly responded to the situation, engaging in an exchange of fire with the attacker, resulting in the gunman’s death. Tragically, a Nepali worker employed as a security guard at the consulate also lost his life due to a serious injury sustained during the altercation.
The Makkah Police confirmed that security investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The US Embassy and Consulate stated that they are in communication with Saudi authorities as they conduct their investigation.
The US Consulate in Jeddah, which serves a population of nearly 4.7 million people, has previously been the subject of violent attacks. In 2016, security guards saw a suspicious figure in the parking area of the Dr. Suleiman Faqeeh Hospital, which is located across the street from the embassy. When he approached the individual, he detonated a suicide belt, killing himself and injuring two people, according to the Saudi interior ministry at the time.
