Sharjah: An India-origin man living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was awarded a compensation of Rs 39 lakh by a Sharjah court after the death of his wife which happened due to medical negligence. The court also ordered the amount be distributed between the man and his two children.
Blessy Tom was a staff nurse in the Sharjah University Hospital and was treated for breast infection at Sharjah-based private clinic Dr Sunny Medical Centre in November 2015.
During one of her treatment routines, doctor Darshan Prabhat Rajaram P Narayanara gave her an antibiotic injection without a mandatory test dose 32-year-old Blessy Tom fell unconscious after a reaction to the drug.
She was then later rushed to another hospital but could not survive and succumbed to death within a few hours of being admitted. In her death certificate issud by the hospital, it stated that she died of cardiac arrest due to an anaphylactic shock.
Blessy Tom’s husband Joseph Abraham raised the issue with concerned authorities and due to fear doctor Narayanara escaped out of the UAE to evade prosecution. Abraham moved the Sharjah court, and the doctor was found guilty. The court directed him to pay compensation of 200,000 dirhams (Rs 39 lakh) to the bereaved family.
The court has also ordered doctor Narayanara to pay another 200,000 dirhams to Joseph Abraham for legal costs.
