Guwahati: Today marks a significant milestone in the illustrious career of Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri as he gears up to play his 150th international match. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has taken the opportunity to pay a tribute to Sunil Chhetri ahead of today’s World Cup qualifier against Afghanistan.
The stage is set for the 2nd leg match of the Asian region football World Cup qualifier between Bharat and Afghanistan, scheduled to take place at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati today. As Sunil Chhetri steps onto the field for his milestone match, the nation eagerly awaits another memorable performance from their footballing maestro.
Sunil Chhetri, who made his international debut in 2005 against Pakistan, has been a prolific goal scorer for the Indian national team. His remarkable journey has seen him net 93 goals in 149 matches so far, making him the third highest goal scorer in international football, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who scored 128 and 106 goals, respectively.
AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey hailed Sunil Chhetri’s achievements, stating that his remarkable milestone will contribute to the elevation of Indian football on the global stage.
Having captained Bharat’s Under-20 and Under-23 teams, Sunil Chhetri’s professional career began with the Kolkata-based Mohun Bagan team in the Indian Super League. Currently representing Bengaluru FC in the ISL, Sunil Chhetri has an impressive trophy cabinet, boasting one ISL title, four I-League titles, two Federation Cups, and one Durant Cup. Additionally, he has clinched 11 trophies for the country, including the SAAF Championship, Nehru Cup, Intercontinental Cup, Tri-Nation Cup, and AFC Cup.
