IPL 17th season opens with record-breaking viewership on both Disney and Jio Cinema: Reports

Mumbai: The much-awaited opening match of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has set a new milestone in viewership records. The match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore was witnessed by an unprecedented 16.8 crore viewers tuning in through Disney + Hotstar, marking the highest viewership for an IPL opening match in the league’s history.

Disney+ Hotstar officially announced the remarkable increase in viewership, with a staggering watch time of 1276 minutes. Moreover, a record-breaking 6.1 crore viewers watched the match simultaneously on the television platform, setting a new benchmark for TV viewership for an IPL opening match. Star Sports expressed gratitude to the BCCI for their efforts in fostering the growth of the IPL and cricket in the country.

In addition to the impressive viewership figures on Disney + Hotstar, JioCinema also made headlines by breaking the previous season’s viewership record. On the first day of IPL 2024, JioCinema registered a whopping 590 million video views, with over 111 million viewers tuning in to watch the match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

According to JioCinema’s official statistics, the first day viewership of IPL 2024 marked a 51 percent increase compared to the previous season. The match, won by the Chennai Super Kings, recorded a total of 6.6 billion minutes of watch time, showcasing the immense popularity and excitement surrounding the IPL.

In the match between CSK and RCB, Chennai Super Kings emerged victorious against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Batting first, the Royal Challengers posted a competitive total of 173 runs, losing six wickets. However, the Chennai Super Kings chased down the target with ease, losing just four wickets in 18.4 overs.
