Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Indian men’s national football team head coach Igor Stimac is set to retain his position as the team gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup second-round qualifiers against Kuwait and Qatar.
Bharat faced a setback in their journey towards securing a spot in the third round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup 2027 Preliminary Joint Qualifiers after suffering a 1-2 defeat to Afghanistan last month.
After this, a committee formed by All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey engaged in a virtual meeting with Stimac on Tuesday to discuss the team’s performance and future plans.
During the meeting, Igor Stimac was questioned about his recent statement regarding his resignation if Bharat failed to qualify for Round 3 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. In response, Igor Stimac clarified that his focus remains on achieving qualification and expressed optimism about Bharat’s prospects in the upcoming matches.
Igor Stimac emphasised the importance of the upcoming game against Kuwait on June 6, highlighting it as a significant moment in Indian football history. He assured full dedication from both the staff and players to secure a crucial victory.
Reflecting on the meeting, Igor Stimac appreciated the committee’s concerns and expressed hope for collective efforts to create history in June. Furthermore, Igor Stimac was advised to concentrate on the upcoming matches and strategize the team’s preparation accordingly.
