Noida, India: Indian weightlifters continued their impressive run at the senior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023, adding three more medals to their tally on Thursday at Gautam Buddha University. The stellar performances of Shubham Todkar, Popy Hazarika, and T. Madhavan delighted the home crowd and solidified India’s position at the top of the medal standings.
In the men’s 61kg category, Shubham Todkar secured the gold medal with a remarkable total lift of 259kg (115kg snatch + 144kg clean and jerk). Todkar outshone Sri Lanka’s Kamal Deshappriya Egodawatte, who settled for silver with a lift of 238kg (108kg snatch plus 130kg clean and jerk). David Mok of Singapore clinched the bronze medal with a combined lift of 198kg (90kg snatch plus 108kg clean and jerk).
The women’s 59kg category witnessed another outstanding performance from India as Popy Hazarika claimed the gold medal. Hazarika, who won silver in the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, upgraded her medal to gold with a total lift of 189kg (84kg snatch + 105kg clean and jerk). Tenishia Thornton from Malta secured the silver medal with a lift of 186kg (82kg snatch + 104kg clean and jerk), while Anneke Spies of South Africa took home the bronze medal with a total weight of 185kg (80kg snatch + 105kg clean and jerk).
In the men’s 67kg event, T Madhavan put on a commendable display, earning a silver medal for his country. Madhavan lifted a total weight of 268kg (125kg snatch plus 143kg clean and jerk) to finish second. Vaipava Nevo Ioane from Samoa claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 280kg (120kg snatch + 160kg clean and jerk), while Titus Ika of Nauru secured the third position with a combined lift of 262kg (100kg snatch + 152kg clean and jerk).
With the addition of these three medals, India’s overall tally in the senior category reached an impressive total of eight. The Indian weightlifters had already clinched five medals, including three golds and two silvers, on the opening day of the competition.
The upcoming events promise further excitement as N Ajith (73kg) and Ajay Singh (81kg) gear up for the men’s events, while Harjinder Kaur (71kg) prepares to compete in the women’s category on Friday. The Indian weightlifting contingent aims to continue their exceptional performances and add more medals to their impressive collection, showcasing their strength and skill on the international stage.
