United States: Indian badminton stars PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen showcased their prowess on the court as they progressed to the quarterfinals of the US Open 2023 BWF Super 300 tournament on Thursday. Sindhu delivered a commanding performance in the women’s singles, while Sen exhibited his skills in the men’s singles category.
PV Sindhu, currently ranked 12th in the BWF world rankings, faced off against Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei in the round of 16. Although she started slowly, Sindhu quickly found her rhythm and dominated the match. She built an early lead of 13-5 and maintained control throughout the first game, eventually winning it convincingly.
In the second game, both players initially fought for supremacy, but Sindhu’s intensity and skill proved too much for Sung Shuo Yun. As the match progressed, Sindhu pulled away, securing a comfortable lead. With five consecutive points, she sealed the victory in just 37 minutes.
In the round of 16 of women’s singles, PV Sindhu defeated Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo Yun with ease (21-14, 21-12).
Sindhu’s next opponent in the quarterfinals will be Gao Fang Jie of the People’s Republic of China. With a 1-0 head-to-head record in her favour, Sindhu will aim to continue her impressive form and secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen, seeded third in the tournament, demonstrated his dominance in the men’s singles category. Facing the Czech Republic’s Jan Louda in the second round, Sen quickly established control and comfortably won the first game.
The second game proved to be more challenging, as Sen initially trailed Louda 19-14. However, displaying resilience and determination, the Indian shuttler made a stunning comeback, levelling the scores at 19-19. In an exhilarating finish, Sen maintained his composure and eventually clinched the match in a hard-fought encounter that lasted 39 minutes.
Lakshya Sen defeated Jan Louda of the Czech Republic 21-8, 23-21 in the men’s singles second-round match.
In the quarterfinals, Sen will face fellow Indian player s. Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian. Subramanian secured his spot in the last eight by defeating Israel’s Misha Zilberman 21-18, 21-23 and 21-13 in a thrilling match.
