Noida : Indian weightlifters N Ajith and Ajay Singh showcased their prowess by securing gold medals, while Harjinder Kaur bagged a silver at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships on Friday. The impressive performances added to India’s medal tally, which now stands at 11 in the senior’s category.
In the first session of the championship held in Greater Noida, Ajith, the country’s current national champion, dominated the 73 kg category and clinched the gold medal. With a total lift of 308 kg (138 kg snatch + 170 kg clean and jerk), Ajith outshone his competitors. England’s Jonathan Chin secured the silver with a combined lift of 286 kg (125 kg snatch + 161 kg clean and jerk), while Sri Lanka’s Indika Chathuranga Dissanayake claimed the bronze with a total weight of 285 kg (130 kg snatch + 155 kg clean and jerk).
Following Ajith’s remarkable victory, Harjinder Kaur showcased her strength and determination in the women’s 71 kg category. She secured the second position by lifting a total of 211 kg (91 kg snatch + 120 kg clean and jerk). Australia’s Jacqueline Nichele bagged the gold medal with a combined lift of 216 kg (94 kg snatch + 122 kg clean and jerk), while Mauritius’ Ketty Lent took home the bronze with a total lift of 208 kg (92 kg snatch + 116 kg clean and jerk).
In the final session of the championships, Ajay Singh continued India’s winning streak by claiming the gold medal in the men’s 81 kg category. This marked his third consecutive victory in the same weight category, following his triumphs in 2019 and 2021. With a combined lift of 306 kg (136 kg snatch + 170 kg clean and jerk), Ajay emerged as the clear winner. Sri Lanka’s Geethai Vidanage secured the silver with a total lift of 290 kg (128 kg snatch + 162 kg clean and jerk), while Singapore’s Yuan Yee Loh clinched the bronze medal with a total lift of 289 kg (132 kg snatch + 157 kg clean and jerk).
With these exceptional performances, India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships rose to 11 in the senior’s category, comprising 7 gold medals and 4 silver medals. The nation’s weightlifters have showcased their strength, skill, and determination, bringing pride to the country.
The event will continue on Saturday, the penultimate day, with India’s Amarjit Guru (men’s 89 kg), Harshad Wadekar (men’s 96 kg), Harcharan Singh (men’s 102 kg), and Vanshita Verma (women’s 81 kg) set to compete. The Indian contingent aims to add more medals to their impressive tally as they display their talent and determination in their respective categories.
