Chennai: In a thrilling match at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai, the Indian men’s hockey team showcased their prowess by securing a resounding 4-0 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in their final group match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 on Wednesday.
Led by an outstanding performance from captain Harmanpreet Singh, India asserted their dominance on the field, leaving their opponents struggling to keep up. Harmanpreet Singh displayed his finesse by netting two crucial goals in the 15th and 23rd minutes, respectively. His remarkable penalty corner conversion in the first quarter set the tone for the game and secured his sixth goal of the tournament.
The Pakistani team fought back valiantly but faced formidable resistance from Indian goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak, who made some exceptional saves to thwart their attempts. Pakistan’s hopes of narrowing the gap were dashed after a review revealed that a goal scored by Abdul Hannan was against the rules, leading to a penalty corner being awarded to Pakistan instead. However, Pathak’s impressive form ensured that Pakistan couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.
India’s relentless attack continued into the second quarter, with Jugraj Singh adding to the scoreboard in the 36th minute with a successful penalty corner conversion, marking his first-ever goal against Pakistan. Harmanpreet Singh continued to shine as he extended India’s lead to 2-0 with a powerful drag flick through the legs of Pakistani goalkeeper Akmal Hussain.
As the game progressed, Pakistan’s desperation to secure a semi-final berth worked in India’s favor. The Indian team capitalized on gaps left in the Pakistani defense due to their offensive approach. Despite Pakistan’s attempts to regain control, India’s skillful counterattacks and solid defense maintained their dominant position.
The fourth quarter saw Akashdeep Singh seal India’s victory with a deft touch that guided Mandeep Singh’s cross into the net, bringing the final score to 4-0. With this win, India topped the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 points table, accumulating an impressive 13 points from five matches.
This highly anticipated clash marked the 179th encounter between India and Pakistan in hockey history, with India emerging victorious for the 65th time and Pakistan have won 82 games. The loss was a devastating blow to Pakistan’s aspirations, as they failed to secure a spot in the top four and subsequently missed out on a semi-final opportunity.
India’s remarkable performance has earned them a spot in the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy semi-finals, where they will face another tough challenge. Meanwhile, Pakistan will battle it out against the People’s Republic of China in the fifth-place playoff.
