Port of Spain: India concluded its participation in the Commonwealth Youth Games on a positive note, clinching silver and two bronze medals in the athletics events on the final day, ultimately securing the 17th spot on the medal table.
According to a repot , Asha Kiran Barla triumphed a silver medal in the girls’ 800-metre race. The bronze medals were secured by Pooja in the girls’ high jump and Arjun in the boys’ javelin throw.
During earlier events, swimmer Shan Ganguly had secured a silver medal in the boys’ 400-metre individual medley on Monday, contributing to the country’s medal tally. With a contingent comprised of 12 boys and 12 girls, the Indian team triumphed with a total of five medals in various categories.
In a remarkable feat, Asha Kiran Barla secured the second position in the girls’ 800-metre race, clocking an impressive time of 2 minutes and 4.99 seconds. She was closely followed by England’s Phoebe Gill, who not only clinched the gold but also set a new championship record with a remarkable time of 2 minutes and 2.30 seconds. This accomplishment surpassed the previous record of 2 minutes and 4.23 seconds set by South Africa’s Caster Semenya in 2008. Australia’s Fleur Cooper secured the third spot, winning the bronze medal with a time of 2 minutes and 5.86 seconds.
The boys’ javelin throw saw Arjun make his mark by securing the third position with an impressive distance of 65.94 metres. Arjun’s remarkable achievement was realised in his very first attempt out of six. The gold medal was claimed by South Africa’s Willem Schalk Jacobus Jansen, who recorded a distance of 79.85 metres. Meanwhile, Tom Rutter of England secured the second position with a throw covering 67.54 metres.
In the girls’ high jump event, Pooja showcased her skills and determination by achieving a joint third position with a remarkable leap of 1.75 metres.
