New Delhi: Renowned Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar, entangled in a grave legal case surrounding the murder of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar, has surrendered at Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Facing charges of murder, attempted murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and criminal conspiracy in connection with the junior athlete’s death, Kumar’s surrender marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation.
Sushil Kumar was previously granted bail, during which he was released from custody between July 23 and July 30. This interval also saw him undergo a knee operation.
The gravity of the case became evident when Sushil Kumar was named the primary accused in the Dhankar murder case following the submission of a comprehensive 170-page chargesheet by the Delhi Police. The allegations stem from an incident in which Kumar and his associates purportedly assaulted 23-year-old Sagar Dhankar, along with his friend Sonu and three others, within the parking premises of Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium on the night of May 4, 2021. The altercation arose from a property dispute, eventually leading to Sagar Dhankar’s tragic demise.
Investigations revealed that the altercation was ignited by Sagar and his friend’s initial reluctance to vacate a flat owned by Sushil Kumar, located in Delhi’s Model Town. Moreover, murmurs circulating within the stadium speculated that Kumar harboured apprehensions about the duo.
The Delhi Police apprehended the two-time Olympic medalist in May 2021 from the Mundika area, promptly following the incident. Further details came to light when it was discovered that the deceased wrestler had previously occupied an apartment in Delhi’s Model Town, owned by Sushil Kumar. This living arrangement was the source of a dispute between the accomplished athlete and the emerging wrestler.
In November 2022, a Delhi Court granted Sushil Kumar interim bail for a duration of eight days, underscoring the intricacies and complexities surrounding the case.
