New Delhi: Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri has expressed reservations regarding the participation of KL Rahul in the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup. Shastri’s remarks come in the wake of Rahul’s recent injury and subsequent rest period, during which he recuperated from a shoulder ailment sustained during an IPL match. Despite the player’s imminent return to the cricketing scene, Shastri has cast doubt on Rahul’s readiness to perform at his previous level, making a case for considering players who have remained injury-free.
Speaking in an interview with Star Sports, Ravi Shastri highlighted the importance of carefully evaluating Rahul’s fitness and form before including him in the starting eleven. Shastri noted that even though Rahul may return to the field, he might not be an automatic choice given the circumstances. The former coach emphasised the need to prioritise players who have maintained consistent performance while remaining injury-free.

KL Rahul, with a commendable track record representing India in 54 One Day Internationals (ODIs), has accumulated 1986 runs, including five centuries and 13 half-centuries, boasting an impressive average of 45.13. His prowess as a cricketer is undeniable, but the recent injury has prompted concerns over his seamless reintegration into the team’s dynamics.
As the Indian cricket fraternity gears up for the Asia Cup, alternative options are being evaluated to fill the role that Rahul might potentially vacate. Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are the other wicketkeeper-batsmen being considered by the Indian team management.
