Cricket fans across the globe are eagerly counting down the days until September 2nd, when arch-rivals India and Pakistan are set to lock horns in what promises to be a thrilling showdown during the upcoming Asia Cup. While the anticipation for this match is reaching fever pitch, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has shared his insights into the tournament, shedding light on his favourite teams and key players to watch.
In a candid statement, Ganguly expressed his admiration for both India and Pakistan, acknowledging them as formidable cricketing nations. He emphasised that, in such a fiercely contested rivalry, there is no room for favoritism. “India and Pakistan are good teams. There is no such thing as a favourite team,” Ganguly remarked. “Pakistan’s team is good, and so is India’s. The team that plays the best on the day will emerge victorious.”
One player who has particularly captured Ganguly’s attention is the talented speedster Jasprit Bumrah. After a brief hiatus due to injury, Bumrah made a triumphant return during the Ireland series, showcasing his prowess in Twenty20 cricket. With the upcoming One Day Internationals (ODIs) on the horizon, Ganguly expressed his optimism regarding Bumrah’s pivotal role in the team, especially with the challenge of bowling a full quota of 10 overs.
“Dada” Ganguly, as he is affectionately known, stated, “Our hopes are pinned on Bumrah. He has the ability to be a game-changer and can provide the much-needed breakthroughs.”
Ganguly also weighed in on the selection decisions made by the Indian team management, including the omission of Yuzvendra Chahal from the Asia Cup squad. With three spinners already in the mix, Ganguly commended the management’s astute move in bringing in Axar Patel, who not only possesses impressive spin bowling skills but also adds value with his batting prowess.
“Team management has made a wise decision by including Axar Patel, who is a versatile all-rounder,” Ganguly stated. “His ability to contribute with both bat and ball adds depth to the team.”
