New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi showered accolades on Indian athletes during his latest monthly radio broadcast, ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ as he celebrated their remarkable achievements in the World University Games held in China.
In the FISU World University Games, India achieved a historic feat by securing the seventh position with an unprecedented tally of 26 medals, including 11 gold, five silver, and 10 bronze medals. The 31st iteration of the games took place in Chengdu from July 28 to August 8.
This accomplishment holds particular significance, as prior to this edition, India had garnered only 18 medals across all the World University Games held since 1959.
Addressing the nation in the 104th episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi remarked, “Recently, the World University Games were held in China. During this edition, we witnessed India’s most remarkable performance in these games. Our athletes accomplished a total of 26 medals, including an impressive count of 11 gold medals. It’s worth noting that if we sum up all the medals won in the entire history of the World University Games since 1959, the total stands at only 18.”
Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar emerged as a standout Indian athlete in the World University Games, securing four medals – a feat that symbolizes India’s prowess on the global stage. Tomar secured gold medals in the men’s 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 positions events, and he was also a crucial member of the men’s 10m air rifle team that clinched the gold medal.
