Srinagar: In a significant step towards promoting women’s sports and empowerment, 12 women’s cricket teams hailing from various corners of the Kashmir division converged for a tournament orchestrated by the Women’s Cricket League for Kashmiri Girls, under the leadership of the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army. The event garnered even more prestige as former Indian women’s cricket team captain and renowned international cricketer Mithali Raj graced the occasion as a spectator.
These young girls, who had been confined to their homes and the constraints of burqas, embraced the opportunity to participate in the cricket competition organized by the Indian Army. The event not only showcased their sporting prowess but also symbolised a step towards breaking barriers and fostering inclusivity.
The closing ceremony of the tournament was graced by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who presented trophies and cash prizes to the deserving winners. Expressing his heartfelt congratulations to the triumphant teams of the women’s cricket league, Sinha highlighted the pivotal role that Chinar Corps’ initiative has played in propelling Kashmiri women onto a bigger stage. He emphasised that the Army’s active role in bolstering self-esteem and empowering women through sports is commendable and significant.
The event served as a testament to the Army’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent among young girls, particularly in remote areas. By fostering a robust sports culture, the Army sets an inspiring example for the region. The daughters of Jammu and Kashmir have been able to surmount numerous obstacles and challenges, emerging as beacons of success in various fields, including agriculture, industries, IT, and startups. In the realm of sports, too, they have proven their mettle and demonstrated that they are no less capable than anyone else.
