Indian badminton sensation HS Prannoy has soared to new heights in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings after clinching a historic bronze medal at the BWF World Championships 2023 held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 31-year-old athlete’s remarkable journey up the rankings now places him at a career-best world No. 6, marking a spectacular rise of three spots.
Prannoy had been ranked ninth before the prestigious BWF World Championships, but his stellar performance on the global stage saw him defeat world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen and world No. 9 Loh Kean Yew en route to the semi-finals, ultimately securing a bronze medal. This remarkable feat significantly contributed to his ascent in the rankings, surpassing his previous career-best of seventh, achieved in May earlier this year.
In what has been a standout year for the Indian shuttler, Prannoy’s victory at the Malaysia Masters Super 500 earlier in the year marked a historic achievement as he claimed his first-ever BWF World Tour title. Additionally, he made it to the final of the Australian Open Super 500 event in August, solidifying his reputation as a formidable contender in the sport.
As of now, HS Prannoy stands as the lone Indian singles player ranked within the top 10 globally, adding to the nation’s growing prominence in international badminton.
In the men’s singles category, the rankings for other Indian players include Lakshya Sen, who slipped to 12th place, while former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth maintained his position at 20th. Priyanshu Rajawat held on to his 28th rank, and Mithun Manjunath made progress, climbing two spots to 41st.
